I’m trying to intuitively figure out why the small opening (say somewhat less than 90 degrees) for spent water escape was used. It seems that the efficiency (net water force against the cup surface would be would be reduced by the force of water against the trailing cup surfaces) would be reduced. Is there some reason for this, or would an opening of about 180 degrees have been better?
